    FESTIVITIES IN CANDELARIA

Anyone staying on Tenerife on 15 August can experience one of the island’s most meaningful days in Candelaria. The coastal town celebrates the most important summer feast in honour of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands. The celebration coincides with the Feast of the Assumption and attracts not only residents of Tenerife, but also visitors and pilgrims from the other islands. Religion is at the heart of the event, but the day also offers a special introduction to the history, music and folk culture of the archipelago.

The August festivities are often referred to as the “fiesta de los naturales”. This name refers to the strong connection with Tenerife’s original inhabitants and with the traditional story surrounding the arrival of the statue of the Virgin on the island. According to tradition, Guanche shepherds discovered the statue on the coast of Güímar before the Castilian conquest. One of the most striking parts of the festivities is therefore the Ceremonia Guanche on the evening of 14 August. During this open-air performance, the discovery of the Virgin by the Guanches is re-enacted. For visitors, it is an accessible way to learn about a story that is deeply rooted in the identity of Tenerife.

    Ceremonies around the basilica

On 15 August, attention shifts to the ceremonies around the basilica and the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias. The morning traditionally begins with the arrival of the Asociación Cultural La Guanchería from Los Realejos. The participants set off the previous day and travel to Candelaria along the higher routes, accompanied by the rhythm of drums and traditional dance. Later, there is a civic procession, military honours and a solemn Eucharistic celebration. After Mass, the statue of the Virgen de Candelaria is carried in procession around the large square.

Even those who are not religious can experience the day as a cultural event. The combination of traditional dress, musical groups, pilgrims and official delegations clearly shows how different parts of Canarian society come together here. The basilica overlooks the sea and is flanked by statues of the nine menceyes, the Guanche kings who ruled Tenerife before the conquest. This also makes the square an interesting place to explore outside the official ceremonies.

    Large crowds

Visitors should expect large crowds. Many pilgrims travel to Candelaria on foot, and access roads may be temporarily closed or diverted. Those who prefer a calmer experience should arrive early and bring enough water, sun protection and comfortable shoes. The final programme and any traffic measures are usually announced closer to the date.

The feast day on 15 August shows that Candelaria is much more than a coastal town with a basilica. For one day, the town becomes a meeting place where religion, Guanche heritage and contemporary Canarian identity are visibly connected.
