Weather Report for Tenerife 20250403 – A combination of meteorological conditions has forced authorities to take action.
Strong wind gusts, continuous rainfall, and rough seas have led to the activation of emergency plans on Tenerife. The weather conditions, caused by storm depression Nuria, pose risks to traffic, nature, and coastal areas. Precautionary Measures With wind gusts reaching up to 100 km/h, waves of up to four metres, and intense rainfall on the western side of the island, authorities have intervened to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
The Aemet warning map for today also shows an orange alert for rain on the four islands of the western province and a yellow alert for the entire archipelago due to the forecast of waves up to four metres high. In this respect, the population is advised to stay away from ports and breakwaters, avoid being near the sea, refrain from swimming at remote or unsupervised beaches, and not participate in any nautical or sporting activities.
Rainfall
Meteorological models predict that a band of clouds moving from west to east throughout the day will gradually bring rainfall, which could be heavy on the western side of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, although moderate rainfall elsewhere cannot be ruled out, according to Aemet’s forecast. The Directorate for Security and Emergencies emphasises the importance of checking drains and roofs, and urges extra caution on the roads, advising people to use main roads and highways as much as possible. Regarding temperatures, a slight increase of a few degrees is expected.
Emergency Plans Activated
In view of the weather forecast, the Cabildo of La Palma, expected to be the island hardest hit by storm Nuria, has activated its Insular Emergency Plan. This includes closing the network of hiking trails and forest tracks, recreational areas, camping sites, and the volcanic tunnel Cueva de las Palomas. Road surveillance has also been increased due to the risk of landslides, flooding, and falling trees. La Gomera and El Hierro have also implemented their own emergency plans.
The Cabildo of Tenerife today prohibited access to recreational areas, forest tracks, and the 41 hiking trails in the Teide area due to forecasts of extremely strong winds. Rosa Dávila, the president of the island government, asked residents to avoid unnecessary journeys and stated that fire brigade stations have been reinforced. “We are facing turbulent weather conditions combining very strong winds, rough seas, and rainfall,” she stressed. A visit to Teide National Park is strongly discouraged during this period of bad weather, and maximum caution is requested on roads crossing the mountain region if travel is absolutely necessary.
Rainfall and Wind
This period of unstable weather, expected to diminish from tonight (at the time of publication, Aemet had issued no further warnings for today), brought rainfall to the western part of the Canary Islands yesterday. The most significant rainfall was recorded in the municipalities of Hermigua and Agulo on La Gomera, with 29 and 26 litres per square metre, respectively. In northern Tenerife, 27 litres per square metre were measured in San Juan de la Rambla, 26 litres at Tenerife Norte Airport, and 24 litres in La Victoria de Acentejo. Regarding wind speeds, the strongest gusts were recorded at Izaña and Vallehermoso, with gusts reaching 67 km/h at both locations.
Warnings
Avoid unnecessary journeys The Cabildo of Tenerife has activated the Plan de Emergencias Insular de Tenerife (PEIN) – Tenerife’s Insular Emergency Plan – from Thursday 3 April at 00:00 due to the arrival of storm depression ‘Nuria’, predicting wind gusts up to 120 km/h in the Teide National Park and between 80 and 100 km/h in several municipalities on the island. Therefore, recreational areas and camping grounds managed by the Cabildo remain closed, and access to forest roads and hiking paths has been prohibited as a precautionary measure. It is also forbidden to hike on the 41 official paths in Teide National Park. The Directorate-General for Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government, based on AEMET’s forecasts, issued a red alert (maximum warning) for wind on Tenerife from Thursday 3 April at 00:00. A preliminary warning for rain has also been issued from 09:00, forecasting light to moderate precipitation and locally heavy showers of 15–20 mm per hour in the west and south of the island.
Recommendations
The weather report for Tenerife 20250403 has prompted the following recommendations: Visiting Teide National Park is strongly discouraged during this severe weather event. Maximum caution is advised on roads crossing mountain ridges if travel is absolutely necessary. The Cabildo’s Occupational Safety and Health team has been requested to facilitate teleworking for employees of the island government, except those providing essential services. All Cabildo departments have been asked to cancel planned outdoor events. Municipal authorities are advised to consider appropriate preventive measures based on the forecasted conditions.
