Waste management in Tenerife is getting a significant boost with the opening of a state-of-the-art facility for processing construction and demolition waste.
This €1.2 million investment marks an important step in reducing illegal dumping along roads, streets, and paths. The facility, located in the Complejo Ambiental in Tajao, not only offers a sustainable solution for household construction waste but also ensures material reuse, contributing to a cleaner and more environmentally friendly island.
Processing and Reuse
The president of the island government, the Cabildo de Tenerife, stated that waste management on Tenerife is advancing. With this new facility, a central hub is provided for household waste processing, preventing future illegal dumping. The complex addresses the need to process construction and demolition waste while utilizing it for internal purposes.
More than 50,000 tons of household construction waste can be processed annually. Not only will cement and rubble be crushed, but other materials such as metals, wood, and glass will also be treated.
Implementation
Of the 50,000 tons of waste, approximately 45,500 tons of rubble will be recycled and used for the coverage and sealing of landfill cells. This dual process not only ensures recycling but also provides the community with a solution to prevent or minimize illegal dumping along roads and paths. Additionally, around 5,000 tons of other materials, such as metals, wood, plastic, and glass, are expected to be recycled due to their value.
The new construction and demolition waste processing facility spans 5,500 square meters and includes a dedicated work area for waste processing, offices, parking, a workshop, and storage facilities. It is conveniently located for receiving materials from small-scale household construction or demolition projects.
Three-Phase Workflow
The work will be carried out in three phases. First, valuable materials such as wood, metals, plastic, and glass are sorted and cleaned. Next, the remaining materials are crushed using specialized machinery. Finally, the recycled materials are stored for reuse, either for the sealing and covering of landfill cells or for distribution.
This facility represents a significant step forward in improving sustainable waste management and protecting Tenerife’s environment.
