    THIRD LANE ON THE TF-5

Traffic congestion in Tenerife has been one of the island’s greatest challenges for both residents and visitors for years. Every day, thousands of motorists are stuck in traffic jams, especially on the busy TF-5 motorway, which connects the north of the island with the capital, Santa Cruz. However, an important step now appears to have been taken towards a structural solution.

    Third lane on the TF-5
Authorities have recently confirmed that a third lane will be added on a
section of the TF-5, between Guamasa and San Lázaro. This project is part of a broader strategy to improve mobility in Tenerife and support the island’s economic development.

The project covers a stretch of approximately five kilometers in the direction of Santa Cruz, where more than 110,000 vehicles pass daily. The expansion is intended not only to improve traffic flow but also to increase road safety. The investment amounts to over €66 million, and the works are expected to take around 35 months to complete.

    Minimal disruption
An important aspect of the project is that the existing lanes will remain open during construction. This means traffic will not be completely halted, which is crucial given the heavy use of this route. At the same time, work is being carried out to restructure key junctions, including the connection to Tenerife North Airport.

One of the most notable improvements is the construction of a new access road, known as the “Hipódromo” junction. This is intended to better distribute a significant portion of the traffic to and from the airport. According to the plans, up to 25% of current traffic could be diverted, significantly reducing pressure on the existing infrastructure.

    Less time in traffic
This project is the result of years of preparation and cooperation between various public authorities, including the Cabildo of Tenerife and the Canary Islands government. It forms part of a broader vision that not only focuses on improving roads but also considers alternatives such as public transport and future projects, including a possible rail connection in the south of the island.

For many residents of Tenerife, this development represents hope for better daily mobility. After all, spending less time in traffic can contribute to a higher quality of life. Improved accessibility can also have a positive effect for tourists, particularly given the importance of tourism to the local economy.

Although the works will take several years to complete, the expectation is that this investment will make a noticeable difference in the long term. Tenerife is taking an important step towards a more modern and efficient infrastructure, adapted to the island’s growing needs.
