Tenerife closed on December 6? It is not uncommon for shops and businesses on Tenerife to be closed because this day is a national holiday that cannot be substituted.
‘Non-substitutable’ means that it cannot be changed or adjusted by the autonomous communities, which adapt their holidays based on their own labor calendar.
In our annual article about CELEBRATING ON TENERIFE, we read that on December 6, the Day of the Constitution is celebrated and is one of the most significant holidays of the year. There are few establishments that remain open to the public because it is a holiday with national status. The question that remains is: “What is open on Tenerife on December 6?”
According to the Decree of June 27, 2011, from the Ministry of Employment, Industry, and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands, in the so-called Zones of Great Tourist Influx, commercial establishments within those zones have full freedom to determine the days and hours during which they will be open to the public.
Sectors
Apart from healthcare workers, police officers, firefighters, or private security personnel, December 6 is not a day off. Employees from other sectors also go to work on the ‘Day of Sinterklaas’. An overview:
On-duty pharmacies. The pharmacies on duty remain open, as well as those that indicate they are open 365 days a year. You can consult the complete list per municipality HERE.
Bakeries. The newest franchises have appeared for the bakeries on the island. El Horno de Pan and El Rincón del Pan will reopen their doors on Tenerife on December 6. Small establishments dedicated to the sale of bread and related products also do so.
24-hour stores. These shops, which are small supermarkets, open their doors on holidays. They generally maintain their normal opening hours.
Bars and cafés. At the owners’ discretion, and taking advantage of the fact that attendance at restaurants increases on a holiday, all establishments dedicated to hospitality will decide whether or not to open on this day.
Gas stations. This is similar to the pharmacies. Not all gas stations are open, but many offer their services on a day when few shops are open. It is best to check which ones are open on December 6.
Shopping centers. In the so-called Zones of Great Tourist Influx, establishments can open their doors. This is the case with shopping centers such as Siam Mall or Rosa Center in the south of the island, or the Martiánez Shopping Center in Puerto de la Cruz.
Supermarkets. Similar to the shopping centers, some supermarkets, especially in tourist areas, will open their doors, although chains like Mercadona have announced that they will not do so on this December 6. Alcampo, Aldi, Carrefour, and Lidl will open their doors according to their normal opening hours. The Canarian supermarket chain Dino will keep all its HiperDino, SuperDino, and Hiperdino Express stores open with some changes in opening hours.
It is sensible and most convenient to look up the updated information on their websites and check the opening hours. Even though a shopping center is open, not all shops there are open.
