    STORM THERESE ON TENERIFE

The Canary Islands, and Tenerife in particular, are being affected this week by the severe storm Therese. According to recent reports from Spanish media, this weather situation has led to significant measures on the island, impacting both residents and visitors.

The authorities have decided to suspend various activities as a precaution. Schools and universities have been temporarily closed, and education has shifted to online learning. This measure applies to the entire archipelago and is intended to ensure the safety of students and staff during the adverse weather conditions.

    Numerous problems and disruptions
In addition to the education sector, other areas have also been affected. Due to strong wind gusts, which can locally exceed speeds of 90 km/h, and waves reaching up to five meters, several events have been postponed. Air traffic has also been disrupted, with dozens of flights cancelled or diverted.

On Tenerife itself, multiple incidents have already been reported. For example, a large lamppost collapsed on a major road, temporarily causing traffic problems. Emergency services have also reported numerous interventions due to falling rocks, loose objects, and power outages. In total, more than 30 incidents were recorded in a single night, with Tenerife being the hardest-hit island.

    Multiple warnings in place
The local government has also implemented additional precautionary measures. Natural areas such as Teide National Park and the Teno region have been temporarily closed due to the increased risk of landslides and extreme weather conditions.

Weather services continue to warn of persistent bad weather. Several alerts are currently in effect, including warnings for strong winds, heavy rainfall, and dangerous sea conditions. In the higher areas of Tenerife, there is even a chance of snowfall, which is unusual for this time of year.

Not unusual, but more intense than usual
For residents and tourists, this means that caution is strongly advised. Authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary travel, especially in coastal and mountainous areas. Hikers and motorists are explicitly warned about falling rocks and slippery roads.

Although such storms are not uncommon during the winter months, the intensity of this episode stands out. The combination of strong winds, heavy rain, and rough seas has created a situation that is being closely monitored by emergency services.

The expectation is that conditions will gradually improve in the coming days, but vigilance remains essential for the time being. Anyone staying on Tenerife or planning a visit is advised to closely follow local news updates and strictly adhere to the instructions of the authorities.
