Stargazing in Tenerife can be compared to a glass filled with water, as clear as crystal, because nothing gets in the way.
In the context of scientific experience and scenic beauty, the doors of the Observatorio del Teide will swing wide open to the general public during the weekend of June 21 and 22, 2025. The weekend is organised by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and coincides with the summer solstice. The aim is to bring astronomy closer to the public.
A behind-the-scenes look
These open days are a unique opportunity to explore the heart of astronomical observation in Tenerife. The observatory is located at an altitude of 2,400 metres in Izaña, in the middle of the Parque Natural del Teide, and offers one of the best spots in the world to observe the universe.
During these two days, visitors will have the chance to visit some of the most relevant scientific facilities at the centre. Under the guidance of technical and scientific staff from the IAC, participants will be shown how these advanced systems work. The highlight is the live solar observations offered to visitors.
Each day is divided into two time slots: from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00. Each visit lasts approximately three hours and includes an educational walking route with nine informative stops spread across the site. Explanations are given in Spanish by professional staff of the IAC.
Practical information
The number of places is limited to 225 people per session, with a maximum of 900 visitors over the entire weekend. To ensure smooth organisation, access is only permitted to cars with at least four passengers on board, as well as motorcycles and bicycles. Those wishing to participate must pre-register via an online form on the website of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC).
The available places will be allocated in order of registration, provided that the access requirements are met. Registration is open until Monday, June 17, or until all spots are filled.
Access to the site is possible from 09:00 for the morning session and from 15:00 for the afternoon session. It is recommended to arrive at least 30 minutes in advance.
High altitude
Since the Observatorio del Teide is located at 2,400 metres above sea level, the IAC advises visitors to come well prepared. Visitors are advised to bring at least a jacket, sun protection, appropriate footwear, and water, and to check the weather conditions in advance.
Those who want to observe the stars up close will get a rare opportunity on June 21 and 22. The weekend is used to bring the Observatorio del Teide out of its ivory tower and to bring astronomy closer to the people. On a mountaintop, under a crystal-clear sky, and at the very moment of the summer solstice.
