Pilgrimages
The processions are filled with music and the enticing aromas of local delicacies, bringing residents and tourists together in a lively celebration of faith, community, and connection. This tradition, returning year after year, holds an essential place, both historically and culturally.
The mild climate and many hours of sunshine facilitate the organization of open-air folk festivals where tradition takes center stage. Pilgrims often dress in typical, hand-embroidered, colorful costumes. Locals don the attire of mago and maga to participate in the pilgrimages, joining the ox-drawn decorated carts and musical groups that enrich the parades with traditional instruments.

The festivities kick off on Thursday, 19 January, in Arona in honor of the patron saint San Antonio Abad. The highlight of one of the oldest saint’s celebrations on Tenerife is the traditional romería, held on Sunday, 20 January, featuring a procession and the blessing of animals. This marks the start of the romería season.
