    ROAD WORKS IN SANTA CRUZ

Anyone driving through Santa Cruz de Tenerife over the coming weeks should expect temporary traffic disruption on Avenida Islas Canarias. Since Monday, 10 August, the city council has been carrying out major resurfacing works on this important urban thoroughfare. The works are scheduled to continue until 31 August and are being carried out in several phases in order to minimise the impact on traffic as much as possible.

    Resurfacing works

The project forms part of the municipal Impulso Urbano programme and has a budget of €269,110.77. This is not a minor repair job: more than 9,000 square metres of existing asphalt will be removed in total. In addition, around 1,750 square metres of paving stones will be taken up and approximately 1,319 tonnes of new asphalt will be laid. Once the resurfacing work has been completed, the road markings will also be fully renewed.

For motorists, the most important point is that during each phase of the works, sections of Avenida Islas Canarias may be completely closed. These closures will remain in place 24 hours a day. Parking will also be temporarily prohibited in the areas where work is being carried out. The works are concentrated on the traffic lanes running alongside the tram route, in the area between Rambla de Santa Cruz and Avenida de Venezuela. Depending on the phase, traffic will be diverted via nearby streets.

Changes to public transport as well

During the first phase, work is being carried out as far as Calle Obispo Pérez Cáceres. As Calle Salamanca is also temporarily closed, drivers are being redirected via routes including Avenida de La Asunción and Avenida de Bélgica. The works will then gradually move further along the avenue. At certain times, half of the roadway may remain open. In one of the later phases, a temporary roundabout is also planned to help keep traffic moving around the construction zone.

Public transport users may also be affected by changes. During the first phase, TITSA bus route 904 had to be temporarily diverted in the direction of Cuesta Piedra. Stops including Álvarez de Lugo, Rambla Pulido and Salamanca were suspended and alternative stops were used instead. Further changes to bus routes will be announced as the works progress.

August is the ideal time to carry out the works

The city council deliberately chose August for the project because traffic levels are usually lower during this period than in other months. Nevertheless, Avenida Islas Canarias is a busy route with many businesses located along it. Local business owners have therefore asked for the works to be completed as quickly as possible in order to minimise disruption for customers and staff.

Anyone driving into Santa Cruz in August is advised to allow extra travel time and to follow the temporary road signs carefully. According to the schedule, the full resurfacing project should be completed by 31 August. Once finished, one of the capital’s key traffic arteries should once again offer a safer and more comfortable road surface.
