    REOPENING LODGE ALTAVISTA

Those who not only want to visit Mount Teide but also experience the sunrise from the summit once again have a special opportunity. The Refugio de Altavista, the only high-altitude mountain refuge in Teide National Park, will reopen its doors on 17 July 2026. The accommodation is located at an altitude of approximately 3,260 metres and has remained closed since 2020. Following extensive renovation work, the refuge can once again be used as an overnight stop for hikers who wish to spread the ascent of the volcano over two days.

    49 sleeping places

The new rates vary depending on the visitor. Residents of Tenerife will pay €29 per night. Non-residents will pay €71, while registered mountaineers from outside Tenerife will benefit from a reduced rate of €56.80. According to the Cabildo, the renovated accommodation has 49 regular sleeping places and four additional places for emergency situations. Stays are limited to one night and must be booked online in advance.

An overnight stay at Altavista is mainly intended for hikers who want to set off for the summit of Mount Teide early in the morning. A reservation includes the required access permits for two important hiking trails. These are Trail 7 from Montaña Blanca and Trail 10, Telesforo Bravo, which leads to the crater. After the overnight stay, access to the latter trail is permitted between 6.00 and 9.00 a.m. Visitors therefore do not need to apply for these permits separately through Tenerife ON.

    No luxury

The accommodation has deliberately been kept simple. Guests sleep in shared rooms with bunk beds. Bedding is provided, so a sleeping bag is not required. The refuge also has toilets without showers, a kitchen, a communal room, a terrace and vending machines offering water and non-perishable food. It may not be luxurious, but the refuge provides valuable shelter in a location where protection from the elements can be especially important.

The hike should not be underestimated. From Montaña Blanca, the climb to the mountain refuge is estimated to take around four hours. From there, it takes approximately another two hours to reach the summit. The refuge is accessible only on foot: there is no road leading to it, and the cable car does not stop near the entrance. Good hiking boots, warm clothing, sufficient water, food, sun protection, a headlamp and a fully charged mobile phone are essential. Even in summer, low temperatures, strong winds and intense solar radiation can occur at this altitude.

    A night above the clouds

The renovation was not only aimed at improving comfort. The building now has better insulation and ventilation, its own wastewater treatment system and a photovoltaic installation with batteries. This system is expected to provide a large proportion of the energy needed for lighting, climate control, communication equipment and other basic facilities. The Cabildo invested approximately €1.8 million in the work. The management of the refuge was awarded to Teleférico del Pico del Teide.

With the reopening, Tenerife regains a historic facility that has been linked to scientific research and mountain tourism since the nineteenth century. Altavista serves as a resting point, a place to acclimatise to the altitude and an important safety facility in an environment where weather conditions can change rapidly. For those with sufficient experience and physical fitness, spending a night above the clouds will once again be possible.
