    REGISTRATION CABLE CAR ON TENERIFE

The registration for the cable car on Tenerife aims to ensure the safety of visitors.

The Cabildo of Tenerife has introduced new control measures for access to Teide National Park, including mandatory registration for cable car users and access counters on hiking paths. These measures are designed to ensure the safety of visitors and keep the park clean. The new regulations also include dress code requirements.

    High Mountain

Starting Wednesday, December 11, it will be mandatory for users of the Teide cable car who purchase a one-way ticket to register through the Tenerife ON platform. In addition, access counters will be placed at various points, and the cable car organization will install new signage to inform users about the regulations and services offered.

The registration is intended to ensure that those descending on foot comply with established safety regulations, such as the minimum required equipment and passing through a checkpoint. This measure aims to prevent carelessness and ensure that visitors are prepared for the challenging conditions of the high mountain.

Access to Hiking Paths and Occupancy

The current system is yet to be evaluated. Possible shortcomings in visitor identification and improvements in signage still need to refine this pioneering model in Spain. During a meeting, the situation regarding access to hiking paths was discussed. Currently, 70% of the 300 spots available daily are taken, with 30% of people not showing up. Measures will be implemented to avoid these situations.

Since November 30, access controls have been introduced on the paths leading to Teide. This pioneering project in Spain aims to ensure the safety of visitors and preserve Teide National Park, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007.

    Permission is required for:

Hikers with physical fitness can use various hiking paths (senderos) to explore the Las Cañadas nature area.
Sendero 7: Montaña Blanca – La Rambleta
Sendero 9: Teide – Pico Viejo – Mirador de las Narices del Teide Sendero 23: Regatones Negros
Sendero 28: Chafarí Permissions can be obtained via the Tenerife ON app and website (https://www.tenerifeon.es).

    Mandatory Equipment

Visitors, hikers, and climbers must have the following minimum equipment, which must be shown to the control staff. Non-compliance may result in a ban on access.
Minimum mandatory equipment: Hiking boots – Long pants or leggings and a warm jacket – Gloves – Hat (especially in winter) – Water or hydrating drinks.
Recommended equipment for extra safety: Charged mobile phone – Headlamp or flashlight with spare batteries – Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) – Thermal blanket – Energy-rich food – Whistle.

    Supervision and Fines

Park control and monitoring staff will be present 24 hours a day at specific checkpoints to ensure compliance with the regulations and conditions, including mandatory equipment and authorizations.

Persons who violate the regulations may be fined €600. In addition, rescue costs by the Canary Islands government or the Tenerife fire department may be imposed, ranging from €2,000 to €12,000.

    Time Slots and Restrictions

A maximum number of visitors will be set, initially established at 300 people, divided into three time slots: from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM – from 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM and from 12:00 AM to 9:00 AM. Businesses and licensed guides will receive a reserved number of spots for their activities. Access may be restricted or prohibited in unfavorable weather conditions, such as rain, snow, wind, or frost. In the case of official government warnings, such as Prealerta or Alerta Máxima, the paths may be temporarily closed.

    Telesforo Bravo

Strategic signage in multiple languages will be placed at the starting points of the paths. This includes warnings about penalties for violating the regulations.

Mountain sports enthusiasts with a membership card and active tourism businesses will have special access, provided they meet the requirements and have the necessary permits. Separate permission will still be required to access the summit of Teide from La Rambleta (the upper cable car station) via the Telesforo Bravo path, as before. I have always given Tenerife a central place and have managed to weave the island into my texts within my editorial and journalistic network. The island, which I have been in love with for decades, has seduced me into writing three books, several reading pamphlets, and thousands of articles, columns, and prose. Information and news are the products, pen and paper are the tools, while engagement is the glue. I want to share the result with everyone. I had to discover it first, then I could articulate it because we are tied to our origins by a thousand threads. Not me..., I was just born in the wrong place. © All works are copyrighted.
