Aguacate relleno is a delicious and versatile dish in which creamy avocados are filled with a flavorful combination of seafood and herbs. This dish is not only popular in Tenerife but also in other parts of Spain and Latin America, where avocado is a beloved ingredient. The soft texture of the avocado provides an ideal base for a fresh, savory filling that can be customized to personal taste.
In Tenerife, local ingredients are used to prepare aguacate relleno, or stuffed avocados. Of course, local products from the Low Countries can also be used to make this delicacy. Here is a simple recipe that lends itself to countless variations.
Ingredients
- 2 ripe avocados
- 100 grams of cooked and peeled shrimp
- 50 grams of crab meat
- 1 small red onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, finely diced
- 1 tablespoon of freshly chopped coriander
- The juice of 1 lime
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: A dash of chili sauce or a few drops of hot sauce for extra heat
Preparation
-
Halve the avocados and remove the pit. Use a spoon to scoop out a small amount of the flesh, creating more space for the filling. Dice the removed avocado flesh into small pieces.
-
In a medium-sized bowl, combine the diced avocado with the shrimp, crab meat, red onion, tomato, and coriander. Gently mix everything together.
-
Add the lime juice to the mixture and season with salt and pepper. If you like a bit of heat, you can also add the chili sauce or hot sauce at this stage.
-
Fill the avocado halves with the mixture. Don’t hesitate to press the filling down and generously stuff the avocados.
-
Serve the stuffed avocados immediately, optionally garnished with extra lime wedges and a bit of fresh coriander.
The Canarian cuisine is known for its simple, flavorful dishes that emphasize fresh, local ingredients. Enjoy this delicious and healthy Spanish treat!
