Young and old alike find their place effortlessly on Tenerife. With its pleasant climate, breathtaking nature, and rich culture, the island offers a unique experience for both age groups. In this column, we draw a parallel between time and people.
While the older generation enjoys leisurely walks, culinary delights, and the serenity of picturesque villages, the younger crowd seeks thrills in adventurous hikes, water sports, and vibrant nightlife. Tenerife is a beloved destination for all ages. However, there is a fundamental difference between the older and younger generations.
The Past
Older people on Tenerife often experience these times as a surreal dream, reflecting on their past with feelings of longing. They frequently point to a time when life was enjoyable, calm, and uncomplicated—nostalgia is the word. It is a reflection on the past, evoking longing, wistfulness, or affection.
Today’s pace and circumstances are the reason that older individuals increasingly cherish memories and long for the warm and positive emotions of days gone by. One of the most striking differences between the past and present is the rapid development of technology. Older people recall a simpler world, free of smartphones, social media, and the constant bombardment of information and misinformation.
Life as It Was
It seems as though people had more time and less urgency in the past. The truth is that life required harder work and more effort to sustain families. However, they vividly remember that the cost of living—housing, healthcare, and education—was affordable and straightforward. Fewer rules, more freedom, and time to enjoy small, simple pleasures were so ordinary in the not-so-distant past that everyone could relish life as it was.
Selective Memory
Changes in social norms and values often leave older people feeling that traditional virtues like respect and courtesy have declined, and that social interactions are less warm compared to the past.
Nostalgia, however, is often influenced by selective memory. The feeling of nostalgia varies from person to person. While some older people predominantly romanticize the past, others can recognize the positive aspects of the present and adapt to the changing times.
The Young Generation
In stark contrast to the nostalgia of the older generation stands the reality faced by young people in today’s society. On Tenerife, the Canary Islands, and throughout Spain, life has become more complicated and expensive. Young people face significant challenges, such as buying a home amidst inflation and financial difficulties.
Growing up and living in an era dominated by technology and connectivity brings opportunities and challenges that were unimaginable in the previous century. This shift is the primary cause of the social isolation that has emerged over recent decades.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Technological advancements provide young people with more opportunities, but they also come with external pressures, such as the need to be constantly online and the negative effects of cyberbullying. Social media allows them to voice their opinions, engage in social issues, and demonstrate greater awareness of societal problems than in the past.
Young people also face high expectations and pressure in education and career development. They aim for higher levels of education and encounter competitive job markets. While this fosters stress and uncertainty, it also motivates them to grow and succeed. Mental health is a crucial concern, as stress, anxiety, and depression weigh heavily on today’s youth.
What If…?
It’s impossible to say for certain whether young people today would have enjoyed life in the previous century, as individual experiences and preferences vary greatly. However, there are aspects of past life that modern youth might find appealing—not the outdated technology or social and cultural conditions, but the simplicity, calm, and lack of stressful factors might be welcome in today’s world.
