Permit for the El Mojón Water Treatment Station Approved

The Insular Water Council (Consejo Insular de Aguas) has approved the wastewater treatment station in the El Mojón Partial Plan, which was presented to the Insular Water Council of Tenerife, commonly known as CIATF. This is an essential step for the official approval of the residential area and especially for granting construction permits for developments within the nearly one million square meter area. The pump station (EBAR) was built about 15 years ago by the former owners of El Mojón.

This step is crucial as the CIATF report, which is under the jurisdiction of the Cabildo de Tenerife, will allow the owners of the plots to request the necessary construction permits, pending a favorable report on the already completed urban parks. This report from the Insular Water Council will now be available for public consultation for three months.

The pump station is located on the outskirts of El Mojón, at the intersection of Portazgo and Arenales streets, behind the Los Cristianos municipal sports center. The station has a 15-year history and has prevented flooding in Los Cristianos, as there was previously no rainwater drainage from Avenida Chayofita to near the Carmen church. The investment in this area was funded by the El Mojón Compensation Board, amounting to nearly six million euros, while the remainder of the network in central Los Cristianos was funded by the Arona Municipality.

The large Arona-Adeje treatment plant is planned, and the public lighting has already been tested, pending the environmental impact report. The Insular Water Council reports for the pump station at the southern part of the partial plan, as well as the environmental impact report for the two parks already built in El Mojón, are still awaited. These two reports are necessary to proceed with the agreement to make El Mojón an integral part of Los Cristianos.

Fire at Plant Nursery Causes Traffic Disruptions in Arona

A fire at a plant nursery led to a temporary closure of the TF-653 and caused significant traffic congestion in the area. The incident began at 7:15 p.m. when multiple calls alerted the CECOES emergency center to a thick black smoke visible near the nursery grounds, close to the Europlátano packaging plant. The road connecting Palm-Mar with Guargacho was closed to all traffic.

Emergency services, including six units from the Tenerife Fire Consortium, an ambulance, the Arona local police, and the Guardia Civil, responded promptly. To ensure effective firefighting operations, the road was closed. It quickly became clear that the smoke was coming from Invermira’s external production area. Fortunately, the Jardeco industrial facility was unaffected, though the fire spread to areas near the road. The firefighting efforts lasted several hours, and the fire was finally contained and extinguished at 8:57 p.m. No injuries were reported, and the extinguishing and monitoring continued until midnight.

Free Electric Scooter Service for Santa Cruz Residents

The Santa Cruz City Council reminds residents that the two concession companies offering electric scooter rentals continue to provide free service for residents. Data shows that 94% of the 12,404 trips in September 2024 were parked in designated areas for Personal Mobility Vehicles (PMV).

Tier confirms that free rides are only available through the chatbot in the app. Required documents include proof of residency, an ID (DNI), and a selfie for additional verification. The city where the application is submitted must be indicated, and all required documents should be submitted through the chatbot form. After submission, the user receives a confirmation that the application has been received and is being processed.

Dott reports in its monthly update that 2,028 active users took 4,081 trips, with a parking compliance rate of 92.42%. All trips combined saved a total of 952 kg of CO2 by covering 8,860.84 kilometers. Tier reports a total of 2,582 users in September 2024 (879 new users) who took 8,413 trips, with a parking compliance rate of 94.39%. Users collectively covered 84,858 kilometers, resulting in a CO2 reduction of 9,122 kg.

Theft of 1,600 kg of Avocados

Guardia Civil agents from the ROCA team, specializing in the prevention and investigation of agricultural and livestock thefts, have launched an investigation into a man from the municipality of Tacoronte. He is suspected of stealing 1,600 kg of avocados from a farm in this municipality. The ROCA team began investigating after being notified of the crime. They collected sufficient evidence to determine the suspect’s methods, identify, locate, and investigate him as the alleged perpetrator of the theft.

Notably, the suspect, who has a record of similar crimes, lives near the affected farm. He used his proximity to monitor the property and took advantage of times when he was sure the owner was not present. In this way, he managed to steal a total of 1,600 kg of avocados. The investigation results have been handed over to the on-duty examining judge in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

Six Arrested for Document Fraud at Tenerife South Airport

In the past month, the National Police has arrested six people at Tenerife South Airport for document forgery. The latest arrest took place a few days ago when an Albanian man attempted to travel to the United Kingdom using a forged Italian passport.

Passenger traffic at Tenerife South Airport has increased significantly in recent years, making it Spain’s third most important airport, after Adolfo Suárez – Madrid Barajas and El Prat in Barcelona. Brexit has significantly increased the workload for the National Police at this border post. During peak months, especially in summer, more than 100 incoming and outgoing flights are registered daily, with over 20,000 foreign passengers passing through border controls.

Despite the high passenger volume, the National Police has managed to control the flow by extending their shifts due to flight delays or passenger incidents. In this context, six individuals of various nationalities – primarily Albanian, as well as Iranian and Nigerian – were arrested in the past month for using forged documents.

The detainees were brought before the competent judicial authorities, and expulsion proceedings have been initiated. Additionally, surveillance and control of such crimes have been intensified to improve security at Spain’s and the Schengen area’s external borders.

These events and developments have a significant impact on life in Tenerife and highlight the diversity of challenges, developments, and opportunities faced by the island. News from Tenerife #5 will continue.

I have always given Tenerife a central place and have managed to weave the island into my texts within my editorial and journalistic network. The island, which I have been in love with for decades, has seduced me into writing three books, several reading pamphlets, and thousands of articles, columns, and prose. Information and news are the products, pen and paper are the tools, while engagement is the glue. I want to share the result with everyone. I had to discover it first, then I could articulate it because we are tied to our origins by a thousand threads. Not me..., I was just born in the wrong place. © All works are copyrighted.
