Traffic congestion in the south of Tenerife remains one of the biggest frustrations for residents, workers, and tourists. Especially around Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas, the roads are overcrowded every day, with long traffic jams on the TF-1 motorway and the access roads to the coastal towns. That now appears to be changing. This week, the authorities of Tenerife officially gave the green light for a major infrastructure project aimed at significantly improving mobility in the south of the island.
Construction of a New Tunnel
The project focuses on the expansion of the Los Cristianos traffic interchange and the construction of a new tunnel connection. According to the island government, the plan is intended not only to reduce traffic jams but also to improve access to residential areas, tourist zones, and commercial centers. The project forms part of a broader strategy to adapt the road network in southern Tenerife to the island’s continuous population growth and increasing number of visitors.
The new infrastructure is expected to provide a solution for the traffic that gets stuck daily between Arona, Adeje, and the TF-1 motorway. Drivers often lose a great deal of time there during the morning and evening rush hours. Residents of Los Cristianos in particular have been complaining about the traffic situation for years, saying it affects quality of life and causes economic damage.
Smoother Traffic Flow
The planned tunnel will allow part of the through traffic to travel underground, enabling local traffic on the surface to move more smoothly. In addition, new lanes, redesigned entrances and exits, and improved connections to surrounding roads will be added. According to the technical services of the Cabildo of Tenerife, the design is specifically intended to tackle dangerous traffic points and daily congestion.
The government emphasizes that the project is important not only for motorists but also for the tourism sector. Southern Tenerife receives millions of visitors every year, and accessibility to hotels, beaches, and airports plays a crucial role. Road delays have long generated negative reactions from tourists and excursion companies.
However, there are also critical voices. Some residents fear that the construction work will cause disruption for years. Major infrastructure projects in Tenerife are often delayed due to administrative procedures, technical problems, or budget discussions. Environmental organizations are also closely monitoring the project. They want guarantees that the works will not cause additional damage to the landscape and nature in the south of the island.
Fewer Traffic Jams?
According to the initial plans, preparatory works are expected to begin soon. An exact completion date has not yet been announced, but the government describes it as a long-term project. The investment amounts to several million euros and is considered one of the most important mobility projects for Tenerife in the coming years.
For many residents in the south, this news mainly represents hope for a better future. Fewer traffic jams, shorter travel times, and improved traffic flow would not only make daily life more pleasant but also strengthen the region’s economic development. Whether the project will ultimately meet all expectations remains to be seen in the coming years.
