Tenerife is once again taking an important step in tackling traffic congestion on the island. This week, the Cabildo of Tenerife announced that the new transport hub in La Laguna will be larger than originally planned. The future “intercambiador”, which will play a central role in public transport in northern Tenerife, will gain an additional level and a direct connection to the busy Padre Anchieta junction. With this expansion, the island government hopes to better address the daily traffic jams in and around La Laguna.
Central Transport Hub
The expansion of the project comes at a time when mobility remains one of Tenerife’s greatest challenges. In particular, the TF-5 and TF-1 motorways face heavy congestion every day, causing increasing inconvenience for both residents and tourists. According to the island government, the new hub is intended to encourage motorists to make greater use of public transport.
The new complex will bring together different modes of transport in one location. Travellers will be able to transfer between buses, the tram system, and potentially other transport solutions currently under study. The direct connection with Padre Anchieta is considered crucial. The junction has long been regarded as one of Tenerife’s most problematic traffic points, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
Making Public Transport More Attractive
Rosa Dávila, president of the Cabildo, stated that the project is part of a broader strategy to make public transport more attractive. According to her, Tenerife has reached a point where traditional solutions are no longer sufficient. Population growth, combined with increasing tourism, is placing heavy pressure on the island’s infrastructure.
For many residents in northern Tenerife, the news could mean a significant improvement in their daily commutes. Drivers travelling from La Laguna, Tacoronte, or Puerto de la Cruz towards Santa Cruz often lose considerable time in traffic. The government hopes that a more efficient interchange hub will persuade more people to leave their cars at home.
The project could also become beneficial for visitors to Tenerife in the long term. Tourists staying in the north of the island may find it easier to use public transport to reach Santa Cruz, the university city of La Laguna, or other parts of the island. This aligns with Tenerife’s ambition to promote more sustainable tourism and reduce dependence on rental cars.
Mobility High on the Agenda
The works form part of a larger mobility plan that foresees billions of euros in investments over the coming years. In addition to improvements to roads and bus connections, discussions have resumed about the possible construction of railway links between the north and south of Tenerife. Although those plans will still require years of preparation, the expansion of the La Laguna transport hub demonstrates that mobility is becoming an increasingly high priority for the government.
For now, it remains unclear when the works will be fully completed. What is certain, however, is that the project will become one of Tenerife’s most important infrastructure developments in the coming years. For an island increasingly struggling with traffic congestion, it is undoubtedly a development that both residents and visitors will be following closely.
