New speed cameras on Tenerife, strategic safety measures or revenue tools?
The installation of new speed cameras on Tenerife is not particularly surprising, but these devices are not found in overwhelming numbers either.
In line with the holiday season, the DGT (Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic) has sent out a unique Christmas card featuring a heartfelt message. The card, which displays a new speed camera installed on the TF-2, reads, “Merry Christmas.”
Strategic Placement
This new speed camera joins a growing list that places the Canary Islands among the regions with devices mainly focused on generating revenue. For instance, the most active speed camera on Tenerife is located on the TF-13, where a staggering 14,237 violations have been recorded according to the latest report from Automovilistas Europeos Asociados (AEA).
Tenerife has announced that additional speed cameras will be installed in various locations across the island. For the first time, section control will also be introduced. These measures aim to improve road safety and encourage compliance with speed limits. The new cameras will be strategically positioned in areas with frequent speeding violations and accidents.
Locations
The decisions for 2025 include the following locations:
- TF-1: Near Los Cristianos and between the Granadilla and San Isidro junctions.
- TF-655: Section control between Los Cristianos and Guaza.
- TF-652: Costa del Silencio – Las Chafiras (near Restaurant El Cordero).
- TF-66: Route Costa del Silencio – El Fraile – Guaza – Valle San Lorenzo.
- TF-65: Los Abrigos – Las Chafiras – San Miguel.
- TF-2: Direction Alcampo, near the entrance to Las Moraditas.
- TF-21: The road to Teide near Vilaflor.
- TF-47: Coastal road to Los Gigantes.
- TF-5: Near La Laguna heading to Santa Cruz and between La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz.
- Santa Cruz: Avenida Tres de Mayo (near the shopping center) and Avenida Manuel Hermoso Rojas (close to the bus station).
Pros and Cons
Speed cameras have proven effective in reducing speeding violations. Slower driving decreases accidents and reduces the severity of potential collisions. Direct benefits include fewer injuries and fatalities, increased awareness among drivers, environmental benefits, and additional government revenue.
However, speed cameras also have drawbacks, both in traffic and economically. Installation and maintenance costs can be high. Drivers often feel frustrated by unexpected fines, and the focus on avoiding penalties rather than paying attention to traffic can lead to hazardous situations.
Many view speed cameras as revenue-generating tools rather than genuine safety measures.
Appropriate Driving Prevents Issues
New speed cameras are always announced in advance and are equipped with advanced technology capable of accurately identifying speeding vehicles. Some cameras also detect red-light violations. Data collected from these violations is used to analyze traffic patterns and plan future safety measures.
The introduction of new speed cameras on Tenerife comes with both advantages and disadvantages. They enhance road safety and enforce speed limits but may also provoke criticism and frustration among drivers. Through strategic placement and clear communication, the effectiveness of these measures can be maximized.
With exact locations now disclosed, drivers have the opportunity to adjust their behavior and help make Tenerife safer for everyone.
