    NEW DESALINATION PLANT IN TENERIFE

A new desalination plant in Tenerife to provide additional tap water in the north with a capacity of 1,800 m³ per day.

The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, the island government, Rosa Dávila, defends and justifies this strategic investment in the Costa de Rojas area, with an allocated budget of approximately €3.8 million. The works will be carried out by Teideagua, and new water resources will be made available for the La Laguna-Tacoronte water supply system.

    Water Shortage

The Tinerfean government will invest €3.8 million in constructing a desalination plant in the Costa de Rojas area, within the municipality of El Sauzal. This plant will have a capacity to produce 1.8 million litres of drinking water per day. The project will be executed by the company Teideagua S.A., funded by the Cabildo, as part of the actions stemming from the water management emergency declared by the island government.

Rosa Dávila, the president of the Cabildo, emphasised that this measure will enable new water resources to be made available for the mid-altitude region around El Sauzal and the La Laguna-Tacoronte water system. The desalination plant in El Sauzal aims to help reduce the water shortage in this region.

    Water Transport

The project, expected to take approximately one year to complete, involves installing a modular desalination plant in Costa de Rojas, beneath the residential areas of ‘Primavera’ and ‘Los Naranjos’. This plant will connect to the North Canal water supply system at the San Simón reservoir.

The plan also includes the construction of facilities for seawater intake, the associated civil works, and the installation of reverse osmosis desalination modules. Additionally, a pumping station (EBAB) will be built to elevate the desalinated water, and pipelines will be installed to transport the water from the San Simón reservoir to the North Canal.

    Thank You

Blanca Pérez, Minister for Environment, Sustainability, Safety, and Emergencies, stated that this is one of the measures included in the water management emergency declaration. Various studies have been conducted, and technical experts have selected this location in El Sauzal to improve water resources in the northeast hydrographic demarcation and the metropolitan area.

The mayor and the municipal council of El Sauzal are thanked for allowing the desalination plant to be built on municipal land, which significantly accelerates the implementation process. Desalinating ocean water is crucial for Tenerife and, by extension, for all islands in the Canary archipelago.

I have always given Tenerife a central place and have managed to weave the island into my texts within my editorial and journalistic network. The island, which I have been in love with for decades, has seduced me into writing three books, several reading pamphlets, and thousands of articles, columns, and prose. Information and news are the products, pen and paper are the tools, while engagement is the glue. I want to share the result with everyone. I had to discover it first, then I could articulate it because we are tied to our origins by a thousand threads. Not me..., I was just born in the wrong place. © All works are copyrighted.
