A new demonstration in Tenerife once again focuses on protest against the government: ‘Canarias dice basta’ is now the slogan.
After a previous demonstration on April 20, 2024, the islands are still seen as a backdrop for the enjoyment of non-residents. The organizers warn that, if they are not heard on the streets, they will move their struggle to public events and symbolic tourist locations.
Economic model
The streets of all the islands were previously filled on April 20, 2024, and now the citizen collectives are calling for a new day of protest. As planned, the new gathering will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2025, and in Tenerife, the main venue will be Plaza Weyler in Santa Cruz, starting at 11:00 a.m. Under the slogan ‘Canarias dice basta’, the protest aims to become a collective outcry against the overload affecting the archipelago.
This will mark the beginning of a new phase of struggle: more determined, more direct, more uncomfortable for those who refuse to listen to us and take real action, according to the organization in a statement. The criticism focuses on an economic model that, according to them, has led to increasing “touristification,” feeding speculation and exacerbating social and environmental inequalities.
Harder actions not excluded
They remind that the protest on April 20 was a massive call to action that received no institutional response. The demands made at that time fell on deaf ears. The government has chosen inactivity and contempt toward the will of the people. Among their main concerns, they mention the recent proposal to amend the Constitution (Ley del Suelo) and the debate over a hypothetical Residence Law (Ley de Residencia). Both issues are described as empty political strategies that do not address the fundamental problems.
In this new phase, they warn that their actions will not be limited to demonstrations. If the government is not able to hear us in the streets, then they will hear us in daily life.
False progress
There will be no more marching behind banners, with the population waiting hopefully for the authorities to take the urgent measures needed. From now on, the struggle will move to the places where the predatory tourism model is sustained. Public events will be boycotted, political leaders will be confronted during their events, and symbolic tourist locations will be occupied to make it clear that we are serious. The population must and will not stop until real change takes place.
The organizers reject the idea that the islands are being turned into a postcard setting for the enjoyment of non-residents. The movement states that they are the voice of those who do not accept that false progress justifies precariousness. On May 18, the struggle will continue in the streets. What comes afterward will be impossible to ignore by everyone.
