In the municipality of Adeje, work has begun on the construction of a new cycling and walking connection between Fañabé and Miraverde. The project is intended to improve links between two residential areas in the south of Tenerife while also making the route more attractive for people travelling on foot or by bicycle. A budget of €2.6 million has been allocated for the first phase. Work started in early August and is expected to take around fourteen months.
More focus on cyclists and pedestrians
The new route will be approximately 1.1 kilometres long. It will run from the existing pedestrian bridge near Miraverde to Avenida San Borondón in Fañabé. According to the plans, there will be a three-metre-wide cycle path alongside a two-metre-wide pedestrian area. In some sections, cyclists and pedestrians will share the same space.
The project involves more than simply creating a new path. Benches, waste bins and new railings will also be installed along the route. In addition, a small outdoor exercise area with fitness equipment is planned. Existing locations along the route, including a viewpoint and the squares near the church and in the neighbourhood, will be incorporated into the new layout.
Improved lighting
The public lighting will also be renewed. A smart system will be installed that allows the light intensity to be controlled remotely. The municipality aims to reduce energy consumption while also limiting light pollution.
According to reports, the existing route is in poor condition in several places, with damaged asphalt. The works are therefore intended not only to make the area more accessible, but also more pleasant and safer for everyday use.
During the construction period, both road traffic and pedestrian access should be maintained as much as possible. The contractor is required to provide temporary signage, local diversions and traffic controllers whenever necessary. People staying in the area or travelling through it regularly over the coming months should therefore be prepared for temporary changes.
Mobility improvements underway
This investment is not an isolated project. In Fañabé, the municipality is currently also carrying out improvement works in five streets, with a budget of more than €143,000. These works include adjustments to pavements, the reorganisation of parking spaces and improvements to the road layout. Together, the projects show that mobility and public spaces in this neighbourhood are currently being addressed on several fronts.
The project now being carried out between Fañabé and Miraverde is only the first phase of a larger plan. Adeje Town Council is already studying a second phase that would involve building an elevated pedestrian connection across the ravine. This would further connect Fañabé with the Los Menceyes roundabout in Adeje. However, funding for this part of the project has not yet been secured.
The new connection forms part of Adeje’s broader ambition to make residential areas closer to the town centre more accessible without requiring residents and visitors to depend on cars for every short journey. For Fañabé and Miraverde, this could result in a clearer and more comfortable network for walkers and cyclists in the years ahead.
