Mobility solution in the making to provide the largest of the Canary Islands with safe through traffic on the highways on Tenerife.
The highways on Tenerife, particularly the TF-1 in the south of the island, have for years been struggling with increasing traffic congestion and structural bottlenecks during rush hours. The combination of population growth, tourism, and a road network that has not evolved in line with mobility needs results in daily traffic jams that put pressure on both the economy and the quality of life of residents and commuters.
Regulating traffic
The Cabildo of Tenerife announced yesterday its intention to implement an intelligent traffic regulation system on the TF-1 motorway, following the example of the system already planned for several sections of the TF-5. The aim of the island government is to reduce traffic congestion by 30% to 60%, according to the studies conducted.
The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, explained yesterday that this system, based on artificial intelligence, has already proven its effectiveness in Madrid.
She explained that the system uses smart traffic lights, which, based on real-time information on the number of vehicles on the road, regulate access to main roads during peak hours. “This advanced technology will enable us to significantly ease traffic jams on various stretches, thereby improving mobility across the island,” said the president.
Dynamic management
To evaluate the application of this system on different segments, the island government — the Cabildo de Tenerife — will hold a meeting with the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) in Madrid.
The president emphasized that for the north of the island, four million euros have already been allocated in the budget for the implementation of this system on several sections of the TF-5, where the measure is expected to be operational in 2026.
The regulation of on-ramps to the motorway will be carried out via an intelligent system that monitors traffic density in real time, and dynamically manages access to the motorway based on the level of congestion detected in each segment at any given moment.
Third lane San Isidro–Las Américas
The minister responsible for Roads and Traffic, Dámaso Arteaga, indicated that, in addition to the development of smart systems on roads like this one, the solution for the TF-1 also lies in the expansion to three lanes on the San Isidro–Las Américas section. The priority lies with works that aim to improve mobility, Arteaga said.
At the same time, he stated that other solutions in the field of smart congestion management are also being studied in a similar fashion, and he acknowledged that roadworks always bring inconvenience. “We have seen that in Oroteanda, and we need to work together to ease the pressure.”
The university study that was presented was optimistic. The goal is to reduce traffic congestion by 30% to 60%, especially during peak hours.
