Meatballs in tomato sauce is a classic dish prepared in many cuisines around the world. The basic concept involves meatballs served in a rich tomato sauce.
Here’s a simple description of how to make this dish, including a basic recipe composition.
Description The dish consists of juicy meatballs that are carefully seasoned and then cooked or fried to make them brown and crispy on the outside while remaining soft and juicy inside. These meatballs are then simmered in a flavorful tomato sauce, which can range from a simple sauce with tomatoes and herbs to a more complex sauce with ingredients like wine, vegetables, and a rich mix of spices. The dish can be served with a variety of side dishes, such as pasta, rice, bread, or polenta, depending on regional preferences.
Basic Recipe Composition:
- 500g mixed ground meat (a combination of beef and pork is popular)
- 1 egg
- 50g breadcrumbs or bread crumbs
- 1 finely chopped onion
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Herbs such as parsley, oregano, or basil (optional) For the tomato sauce:
- 1 can of diced tomatoes or passata (about 400g)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Herbs such as basil, oregano, and thyme
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance the acidity)
- 1 bay leaf (optional)
Preparation Method
- Making the meatballs: Mix the ground meat with the egg, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and any other herbs. Form this mixture into small to medium-sized balls.
- Frying: Fry the meatballs in a pan with some oil until browned all around. They don’t need to be fully cooked inside yet, as they will continue to cook in the sauce.
- Preparing the tomato sauce: In another pan, sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil until soft. Add the tomatoes, herbs, salt, pepper, and optionally sugar and bay leaf. Let the sauce simmer and reduce slightly.
- Combining: Add the meatballs to the tomato sauce and let the whole thing simmer on low heat until the meatballs are fully cooked and the flavors are well blended.
- Serving: Remove the bay leaf and serve the meatballs in tomato sauce with your chosen side dish.
This is a basic recipe, but feel free to adapt it with additional ingredients or herbs to your liking. Happy cooking!
