MEASURES FOR THE MASCA VALLEY IN TENERIFE

Measures for the Masca Valley in Tenerife come into effect today, on Good Friday, April 18, 2025. The Cabildo introduces a mandatory transport system for access to the Barranco de Masca.

The Cabildo of Tenerife, in collaboration with the municipalities of Buenavista del Norte and Santiago del Teide, is implementing a mandatory shuttle transport system starting tomorrow, Friday, April 18, for all hikers and visitors who wish to access the Barranco de Masca.

    Fragile environment

The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, explains that the measure, which has been in development for more than a year through the Teno Rural Park, aims to regulate the influx of visitors, reduce traffic congestion, and improve safety for both tourists and residents.
The goal is to ensure sustainable mobility that is compatible with tourism, in order to preserve a fragile and ecologically valuable natural area like Masca.

Use of this transport system is mandatory for everyone who wants to hike the trail through the Barranco de Masca. Access must be regulated through the visitor center. Tickets are sold exclusively through the official website, and the transportation cost is added to the entrance ticket for the ravine walk. Visitors who arrive in Masca without using the official shuttle service will not be allowed access to the trail through the gorge.

    Transport

This regulation also includes a fee for the service. As of April 18, 2025, visitors wishing to use the hiking trail in the Barranco de Masca must make use of the new mandatory shuttle service. This service operates on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with departures every 20 minutes from the pickup point in Santiago del Teide, specifically at the Titsa bus stop next to the town hall.

    Parking

The municipality of Santiago del Teide has set up a parking area at the municipal cemetery, where visitors can leave their vehicles and walk to the bus stop, where a shuttle with a capacity of 18 people will be available. The transport cost is included in the price of the entrance ticket for the Barranco de Masca.

Without a validated entry ticket obtained via the shuttle, access to the gorge will not be allowed.

    Prices

Prices vary depending on the visitor’s place of residence. Residents of Tenerife (adults and children) have free access to the ravine trail and receive free transportation.
Canarian residents (non-Tenerife): adults pay €3 for entry and €4 for the bus; children pay €1.50 and €2 respectively.
Non-residents of the Canary Islands: adults pay €28 for entry, plus €10 for transportation; children pay €14, plus €5 for the shuttle.

I have always given Tenerife a central place and have managed to weave the island into my texts within my editorial and journalistic network. The island, which I have been in love with for decades, has seduced me into writing three books, several reading pamphlets, and thousands of articles, columns, and prose. Information and news are the products, pen and paper are the tools, while engagement is the glue. I want to share the result with everyone. I had to discover it first, then I could articulate it because we are tied to our origins by a thousand threads. Not me..., I was just born in the wrong place. © All works are copyrighted.
