LGBTQ tourism in Tenerife – The Tourism Department, led by the Canary Islands government, is enhancing the appeal of the islands to LGTBQ tourists through an international campaign featuring the subtropical climate as the main attraction.
The goal of this initiative is to position the archipelago as the prime winter destination for individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, and intersex.
Winter is a season that is non-existent in the Canary Islands, whereas Europe suffers from low temperatures, windy days, precipitation in the form of rain and snow, and obviously, winter conditions.
The Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce of the Canary Islands government, Yaiza Castilla, highlights the importance of this segment in the tourist spectrum, which should be a priority for the vacation destination due to the financial capability of this tourist segment. The spending level is up to four times higher than that of the average tourist.
Nothing but Advantages
Castilla recalls that the islands compete internationally all year round to attract these visitors, but emphasizes that winter in the Canary Islands is a unique travel destination that cannot be experienced anywhere else in Europe. The offer includes: travel distance, personal safety, unmatched climate, cheaper living, and being far removed from the effects of the energy crisis on the European mainland.
In Gran Canaria, 15% of tourism is already represented by the LGTBQ community, but this is only 3% of the total number of tourists in the Canary archipelago. The area with the largest influx of these visitors is Maspalomas, followed by Corralejo in Fuerteventura.
Advertising
With the slogan ‘Experience the warmest winter in the world’s best climate,’ the campaign has been launched digitally in Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany, with publications on social networks, online ads, and ads that adapt to the environment in which they appear. This form of advertising is less intrusive than traditional publicity that is randomly thrown at these communities. Additionally, publications are made in LGTBQ magazines in the three countries; Männer in Germany, OutThere in the United Kingdom, and Shangay in Spain.
Accommodation
Based on a survey among operators of exclusively LGTBQ lodging businesses in the Canary Islands, it is noted that these tourists travel alone or with friends and mostly stay in apartments. These visitors particularly appreciate the climate, but also the nightlife, the tolerant environment, the beaches, the good restaurants, and the fact that they can enjoy an LGTBQ atmosphere and accommodation exclusively focused on this segment.
These establishments, almost all of which are apartments, have a significantly higher occupancy rate and generate a higher profit margin than average. This largely explains the approach of the new advertising campaign that fully unfolds for LGBTQ tourism. LGTBQ tourism in Tenerife can only be strengthened by an international campaign in which the subtropical climate plays the leading role.
The campaign is extensively featured in Islas Canarias.
