    LANDSLIDE ON TF-42

After the severe passage of storm Therese, Tenerife continues to face the aftermath of exceptional weather conditions. Although the weather has now improved, saturated ground and unstable slopes are still causing dangerous situations, particularly in the north of the island.

    Landslide on the TF-42
A recent incident highlights this situation: today, March 27, a significant landslide occurred on the TF-42, an important coastal road connecting Garachico, Buenavista and Los Silos. The road became completely impassable after large amounts of rock and earth fell down, just before the well-known viewpoint Mirador El Migrante.

Emergency services, including the Guardia Civil and local police, quickly arrived at the scene to secure the area and redirect traffic. Drivers were required to use alternative routes via the TF-421 towards El Tanque. According to the authorities, clearing operations began immediately, with the aim of reopening the road safely as soon as possible.

    600 incidents in total
The landslide is not an isolated case. Since the storm, hundreds of incidents have been reported across Tenerife, ranging from minor mudslides to more serious damage to roads and infrastructure. In total, nearly 600 incidents have been recorded on the island, including power outages that affected thousands of residents.

What makes this situation particularly notable is that rainfall was far above the normal average for March. In some areas, more than ten times the usual amount of precipitation fell, seriously affecting the stability of the terrain. As a result, the risk of new landslides remains for the time being, even though the weather has calmed.

Authorities in the Canary Islands are therefore continuing to urge caution, especially for residents and visitors in mountainous areas or near ravines. Hikers and motorists are also advised to remain extra vigilant, as unexpected ground movements may still occur.

    Damage assessment
In addition, work is underway on a thorough assessment of the damage. Not only roads and bridges have been affected, but also agricultural areas, homes and public facilities. The total impact of the storm is still being evaluated, but it is clear that the consequences will be felt for weeks to come.

For Tenerife, this situation is a clear reminder of the island’s vulnerability to extreme weather conditions. At the same time, the rapid response of emergency services and infrastructure teams shows that effective action is being taken to ensure safety and restore normal life as quickly as possible.

With spring approaching, residents and authorities are hoping for a period of more stable weather. Until then, caution remains essential, especially in the areas most affected by the recent storm.
