How much tourist tax in Tenerife will be charged has yet to be decided, while the PSOE is proposing a tourist tax on Tenerife and the other Canary Islands ranging from 1 to 3.5 euros per day, depending on the category of the accommodation where you stay.
The Socialist Party has submitted a bill to the Canary Islands Parliament to introduce a tax on tourist stays in the archipelago. This tax would not apply to residents and could generate 250 million euros.
No for residents
The spokesperson for the Socialist parliamentary group stated at a press conference that this bill also aims to promote sustainable tourism measures. He explained that it is a step towards redistributing wealth, an action point that has not yet been concretized by the government.
This measure is the result of the debate that has emerged in Canarian society, which was expressed in the demonstration on April 20, 2024. This massive protest was a reflection of the desire for sustainable growth and for prioritizing renovation over new construction.
The tourist tax is the most effective tool for redistributing wealth and improving productivity, especially considering the existing jurisprudence that this tax does not apply to residents, as they already contribute to the infrastructure through their taxes.
Uncertain
Therefore, the PSOE wants to give a new dimension to Promotur, so that it is not limited to “counting tourists and advertising,” but rather to using the funds collected from the tourist tax to improve social and labor conditions. Another portion of the tax revenue would be exclusively used to finance infrastructure improvement projects that are not necessarily related to tourism, such as roads and hydraulic works.
This is the right time for this debate. The Canarian government must stop making statements and start making decisions after one and a half years of looking the other way. How much tourist tax will ultimately be charged in Tenerife remains uncertain, as a serious debate on the matter is still expected.
