Holiday homes in the Canary Islands are oopular and massively sought after by an international audience looking for a cozy vacation.
As of 2024, the Canary archipelago boasts over 50,000 holiday homes, 5,000 more than in 2023. This brings the number of beds in this accommodation niche to 213,284, of which 41% are located on Tenerife.
The Canary Islands now have 50,398 holiday homes, significantly expanding the tourism offering by the end of 2024. This was the year when the regional government announced the drafting of a law to regulate this type of accommodation. The draft bill has already been approved by the Council of Ministers and will soon be debated in parliament.
Significant Growth
Since January 2019, when the Canary Islands Statistics Institute (Instituto Canario de Estadística, Istac) began publishing the Experimental Statistics on Holiday Homes, the number of such properties has increased by 37%. At that time, 36,799 homes were registered. Despite a decline in 2020 due to the pandemic (dropping from 40,000 to just 29,000), the number of homes has recovered since 2021. Today, the figure stands 10,000 higher than in 2019.
On Tenerife
Tenerife leads the pack with the highest number of available holiday homes, totaling 20,877 units, accounting for 41.4% of the total in the Canary Islands. Growth on Tenerife reached 15.1% within a single year. Only three municipalities on the island host half of all available homes: Arona (4,724), Adeje (4,415), and Granadilla (1,378). Other municipalities, such as Santa Cruz de Tenerife, host around 1,000 homes, while Puerto de la Cruz, the fourth most important municipality, counts 1,178 properties.
Following Tenerife is Gran Canaria, though at a significant distance. This island province has 11,056 homes, representing 22% of the total—about half of Tenerife’s figure.
A Significant Share in Tourism
The more than 50,000 homes in the Canary Islands offer a total of 213,284 beds. This marks an 8.7% increase compared to the previous year. These beds account for 36.6% of the total tourism accommodation offering on the archipelago, which, according to Istac, consists of 581,647 beds in total.
The remaining accommodations include hotels (259,238 beds) and apartments (109,125 beds). Nearly four out of ten tourist beds in the Canary Islands are now located in holiday homes.
Economic Impact
The revenue from holiday homes in the Canary Islands totaled €1.084 billion in 2024. This equates to an average of €21,516 per home and €5,084 per bed annually. On Tenerife alone, these accommodations generated €438.4 million, accounting for almost 40% of the total income from holiday homes across the islands.
For its statistics, Istac uses data from holiday homes offered on digital platforms. These figures are comparable to those obtained through traditional surveys of hotel and non-hotel accommodations, allowing for a useful comparison between both types.
