Free public transport in Tenerife and the Canary Islands extended to the end of 2025 due to its success in 2024.
In 2024, free public transport in the Canary Islands proved to be a resounding success. Thanks to this initiative, introduced to mitigate the effects of inflation, the number of bus and tram users increased by over 40%. Residents embraced public transport en masse, contributing not only to improved mobility across the islands but also to reduced traffic congestion and lower CO₂ emissions.
Extension of Current Regulations
Although the initiative was praised for its impact, it also brought financial challenges. With an annual cost exceeding €140 million, the scheme far surpassed initial projections. However, 2024 demonstrated that free public transport is not only feasible but also a sustainable investment for the future.
The Royal Decree on Public Transport, approved by the Spanish Council of Ministers, includes a special provision for the Canary Islands. The islands will retain the free public transport scheme throughout 2025 under the same conditions as in 2024.
Over 40% New Users
Buses and trams across the Canary Islands will remain free for residents following the extension of the measure. After multiple discussions with the Ministry of Transport (a national competency), the current scheme has been extended into 2025. The Council of Ministers approved the 100% subsidy for buses and trams.
The Canary Islands’ Minister of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility highlighted that his department presented passenger growth data to the national Ministry, based on statistics collected by transport operators across the islands. These figures underscore the scheme’s success, with over 40% of new users joining the public transport system.
Transition to a More Sustainable Transport System
Despite the positive results, the minister cautioned that the current budget for the scheme is insufficient. The real costs now exceed initial estimates, totaling over €140 million. “We will continue discussions with the Ministry to secure additional funding necessary to fully support the scheme,” stated Minister Rodríguez.
The extension of free public transport is considered a major step forward for the archipelago. It not only promotes sustainable transport but also provides financial relief for residents during a period of rising living costs. The scheme continues to contribute to the transition towards a more sustainable transport system and increased public transport usage across the Canary Islands.
Conditions
To use public transport, specifically Titsa (buses) and Tramvía (trams) in Tenerife, certain conditions and practical requirements must be met. To qualify for free public transport, you must be officially registered as a resident in the Canary Islands. This requires a valid Certificado de Empadronamiento and, in some cases, a Certificado de Residencia.
Frequent travelers are defined as those who meet a minimum number of trips, varying by island. In Tenerife, this requires 15 trips within 30 calendar days. If this number is not met, the free scheme remains valid, provided at least 30 trips were made in the 90 days preceding the purchase of the new pass or subscription.
