    FLYING TO TENERIFE

Flying to Tenerife with Ryanair brings financial benefits with the Prime subscription – or is there a catch?

Are you a frequent traveler between the mainland and Tenerife with Ryanair? Then you may have already heard about the Irish budget airline’s latest initiative: Ryanair Prime. A yearly subscription that, according to the airline itself, could save passengers up to €400 a year on flights, seat selection, travel insurance, and promotional tickets. But what does it reallyinclude — and is it a good deal for those flying regularly to and from Tenerife?

    What is Ryanair Prime?

The Prime subscription was recently launched and is currently limited to 250,000 registrations. For €79 per year, subscribers receive:
Free seat selection, travel insurance included and monthly access to promotional ticket deals

According to Ryanair, travelers who fly twelve times per year could save up to €420. Even those who only book three flights a year could still save around €105, according to the company.

    What’s not included?

At first glance, Prime sounds appealing — especially for frequent flyers between Tenerife and cities in the Low Countries. Still, it’s important to understand what is not included in the benefits package.
Baggage fees are not included. Hand luggage that exceeds the standard small size of 40 x 20 x 25 cm will still incur extra charges.
Priority boarding must still be booked separately, unless it’s included in a special promotion.
Not all flights are part of the promotional offers. The ticket deals will mostly apply to flights with low occupancy rates.

In other words: seat selection is included, but luggage, flexibility, and comfort remain extra cost items.

    Benefits

According to aviation experts, this offer is mainly attractive for frequent flyers who are flexible. Think of people who regularly travel within Europe, commute for work, or own a vacation home abroad and visit frequently.

For this group, €79 per year can quickly become a smart investment. A standard seat with Ryanair costs on average €4 to €6 per flight, and if you fly ten times a year, you’ll almost recoup the subscription cost with seat selection alone.

    The catch

Ryanair retains full control over which promotions they offer within the subscription. So don’t expect discounts on popular high-season flights to the Canary Islands. Instead, the deals will mostly apply to flights with lower occupancy or less desirable time slots.

Furthermore, Ryanair still makes the bulk of its revenue from so-called “ancillary fees” — charges for luggage, priority boarding, meals, and so on. Prime only covers a small portion of that. Even with a subscription, you’re not “all-in.”

    A side note

In an era where more and more people are mindful of their ecological footprint, a flight subscription may seem like a tone-deaf initiative. Yet, recent data shows that travel habits have returned to pre-COVID levels and even slightly beyond. Ryanair is capitalizing on this by rewarding customer loyalty, not by promoting sustainability.

For those who travel frequently between Tenerife and the European mainland, this subscription could make sense — especially if you’re flexible with your flight dates. Do you live on Tenerife and regularly visit family in Belgium or Spain? Or do you own a vacation home on the island and go there often as a non-resident? Then Prime could offer yearly savings, as long as you critically assess what’s being offered.

However, if you’re an occasional traveler, flying only once or twice a year to Tenerife, the potential savings may not justify the €79 subscription fee.

    Summary

    Final verdict

For Ryanair passengers flying to and from Tenerife, the Prime subscription is especially worthwhile for those who fly at least five to six times per year and are open to less conventional flight deals. The subscription offers a few clear benefits, but those expecting an all-inclusive experience will still run into additional charges.

So, do the math first: if you fly often, book early, and already pay for seat selection — then Prime could absolutely be a smart choice for your routes to and from Tenerife. If you’re a sporadic traveler, a one-off booking will likely be cheaper and more transparent.

I have always given Tenerife a central place and have managed to weave the island into my texts within my editorial and journalistic network. The island, which I have been in love with for decades, has seduced me into writing three books, several reading pamphlets, and thousands of articles, columns, and prose. Information and news are the products, pen and paper are the tools, while engagement is the glue. I want to share the result with everyone. I had to discover it first, then I could articulate it because we are tied to our origins by a thousand threads. Not me..., I was just born in the wrong place. © All works are copyrighted.
