In the early hours of Friday, 13 March, firefighters and emergency services responded in large numbers to a fire in a residential building in the village of Guaza, in the municipality of Arona in the south of Tenerife. The incident took place in a building with six homes and briefly caused concern among the residents of the property and the surrounding neighbourhood.
According to information from the fire brigade, the fire started at around 02:55 a.m. Emergency services received a report through the 112 emergency number, after which firefighters from the station in San Miguel de Abona were immediately deployed to bring the situation under control.
Potential risk to residents
When firefighters arrived, it became clear that the fire had mainly developed on the landing of the building’s stairwell. Although it was a relatively small fire, the smoke in particular posed a potential risk to residents of the different apartments.
Firefighters acted quickly and managed to extinguish the flames before the fire could spread to the individual homes. Afterwards, the entire building was thoroughly checked to make sure no residents remained in dangerous areas and that no hidden sources of fire were left behind.
In addition to the fire brigade, other emergency services were also present at the scene. The Local Police of Arona assisted with the management of the incident and ensured that the area remained safe and that residents stayed at a safe distance when necessary. At the same time, the medical team of the Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC) stood ready to intervene in case anyone had suffered from smoke inhalation or other consequences of the fire.
No injuries
Fortunately, it soon became clear that no one had been injured. According to the first reports from the emergency services, nobody needed to be taken to hospital. The presence of medical teams was mainly precautionary, as fires in residential buildings often carry the risk of residents inhaling smoke.
After extinguishing the fire, firefighters carried out a detailed inspection of all the apartments in the building. This is a standard procedure to ensure that no smoke has entered the homes and that no structural damage has occurred that could pose a danger to residents.
Quick response emergency services
According to the emergency services, incidents like this once again demonstrate how important quick reporting and efficient cooperation between different emergency services are. Thanks to the rapid response, the fire was quickly brought under control and the damage remained limited.
Although fires in residential buildings are relatively rare in Tenerife, the authorities stress that it remains important for residents to know how to act in emergency situations. A quick evacuation, alerting the emergency services and avoiding smoke-filled areas are crucial safety measures.
For the residents of the building in Guaza, the incident ultimately ended well. After the building had been inspected, most residents were able to return to their homes shortly afterwards, while authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the fire.
