Ecological hotels in Tenerife and the other islands embrace environmentally conscious changes in the hotel industry.
They are driving forces in the energy transition within the context of climate change. Seven eco-friendly hotels on Tenerife and the Canary Islands were honored for their efforts toward achieving self-sufficiency in energy.
At the awards ceremony, held in Santa Cruz (TF), the integration of photovoltaic energy in the hotel sector on the Canary Islands was spotlighted. This celebration was organized by the Spanish Photovoltaic Energy Union (UNEF), Spain’s leading solar energy association, with the support of the Canary Islands’ Ministry of Ecological Transition.
Decarbonization
In total, seven lodging establishments from both Canary provinces received awards for generating their own energy supplies. The competition aims to bring visibility to the hotel sector as the driving force behind energy transformation in the context of climate change across the archipelago.
The event serves as recognition for the hotel sector, which, like other industries, is transforming energy consumption practices and making a significant leap towards decarbonization. More and more tourists are seeking sustainable tourism, and the hotel industry is encouraged to act as an ecological showcase, according to the hotel operators.
Award-Winning Hotels
This inaugural edition of photovoltaic integration in the Canary Islands’ hotel sector was held at the Hotel Mencey in Santa Cruz. In the “hotel chain” category, two prizes were awarded to the hotel with the highest percentage of self-consumption in each province. In the province of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Gloria Ízaro Club Hotel (4-star) in Lanzarote won with a 100 kW installation by Iberdrola. The winner in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the GF Fañabé Hotel (4-star) in Tenerife, with a 110 kW installation carried out by Médano Ingenieros.
In the independent hotels category, the award went to Parque del Sol Apartments in Tenerife, which generates nearly 90% of its own electricity with a 300 kW installation provided by Archipiélago Solar.
Runner-up prizes were awarded to the Hotel Iberostar Las Dalias (4*) and Landmar Hotel Playa La Arena (4*), both in Tenerife, as well as to independent hotels Hotel Gran Rey (3*) located in La Gomera and Hotel & Suite Tigaiga Tenerife (4*).
Sustainability
Generating their own electricity through photovoltaic panels helps to decarbonize the Canary Islands’ electric grid, while also lowering energy costs, enhancing competitiveness, and supporting their sustainability strategy.
The president of Familia Torres, Miguel A. Torres, known for his strong commitment to sustainability and the fight against climate change, emphasized in his speech that the Canary Islands have the opportunity to become Europe’s leading green destination. He encouraged the hotel sector to intensify efforts toward self-generated energy and to leverage this achievement in their promotional messages.
