    DOUBLE-DECKER BUSES ON TENERIFE

Tenerife is working on a major renewal of public transport on the island. To meet the growing demand for bus transport, double-decker buses have recently been introduced for the first time on some of the busiest routes. With these new vehicles, the island aims to increase the capacity of public transport without having to add more buses to the roads.

The new buses are operated by the transport company TITSA (Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife) and mainly run on routes that are widely used by commuters and travellers, such as the connections between Santa Cruz, La Laguna and the north of the island. Thanks to the two levels, significantly more passengers can be transported per trip, which should make a noticeable difference especially during rush hours.

    Two million extra seats

According to the island government, the new vehicles will provide around two million additional seats per year. This means that public transport will be able to carry more people without increasing the number of vehicles on the roads. On an island where traffic congestion regularly occurs, this is seen as an important step towards improving mobility.

The double-decker buses are specially designed for use in Tenerife. They are equipped with modern safety features, such as seat belts on all seats. In addition, they include charging points for mobile devices, allowing passengers to charge their phone or tablet during the journey. Extra attention has also been given to accessibility for people with reduced mobility.

    Major investment in the future

The project is part of a broader modernization of the bus fleet in Tenerife. Over the past three years, the Cabildo of Tenerife has invested more than 125 million euros in the purchase of new vehicles. In total, more than 350 new buses have already been acquired, making the fleet one of the most modern in Spain.

The introduction of double-decker buses is not only intended to increase comfort, but also to encourage more residents and visitors to choose public transport. In the long term, fewer cars on the road should lead to less congestion and lower emissions of harmful substances.

    Positive reactions from passengers

For many residents of Tenerife, public transport is an essential part of daily life, for example for commuting to work or school. At the same time, many tourists also use the bus to explore the island. By increasing capacity, the aim is to better spread passenger numbers and make the travel experience more pleasant for everyone.

According to local media, the first reactions from passengers have been positive. The extra view from the upper deck and the larger number of seats are particularly appreciated. If the project proves successful, the island government does not rule out adding more double-decker buses to the fleet in the future.

With this step, Tenerife is trying to find a balance between growth, mobility and sustainability. The modernization of public transport should ensure that both residents and visitors can travel around the island more efficiently and comfortably.
