DAY TRIP TO THE CUEVA DEL VIENTO

Beneath the homes, vineyards and farmland of Icod de los Vinos lies an enormous network of volcanic passages. Cueva del Viento was formed around 27,000 years ago by lava flows from Pico Viejo, the volcano located next to Mount Teide.

When lava flows, the outer surface cools more quickly than the material inside. This can create a solid crust while liquid lava continues to move underneath. When the flow eventually stops, an empty tunnel remains. At Cueva del Viento, this process created a complex network of passages on several different levels.

    Cave of the Wind

The name literally means “Cave of the Wind”. It refers to the air currents that move through the underground system. This is not a single straight tunnel, but an extensive labyrinth with side passages, lava formations and sections that are still being investigated.

Visits are only possible as part of a guided tour. Tickets must be purchased in advance through the official website. The visitor centre is open daily for information from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. The available departure times and languages are shown during the booking process.

The excursion does not begin underground immediately. Visitors first receive an explanation of the volcanic landscape and then travel part of the way to the area where the cave is entered. The outdoor section also includes walking along natural paths.

    Hidden beneath the ground

Inside the cave, the guide explains how lava tubes are formed and points out the structures visible in the rock. Some surfaces are smooth, while other sections have sharp or irregular formations. Small organisms also live here, having adapted to the dark environment where food is scarce.

The excursion is particularly interesting for visitors who have already seen Mount Teide but would like to understand more about what lies beneath the island. Tenerife consists of much more than visible volcanic cones. A large part of its geological history remains hidden underground.

The route requires a reasonable level of mobility. The ground is uneven, and there are low or narrow passages. Closed walking shoes and long trousers are therefore advisable. Anyone with balance problems, serious knee complaints or claustrophobia should check in advance whether the tour is suitable.

    A volcanic system

The temperature inside the cave is more pleasant and stable than outside. This makes the excursion an interesting activity on hot days in September. However, part of the visit takes place outdoors, so sun protection and water are still necessary.

It is important to arrive at the visitor centre on time. Groups depart at fixed times and the number of participants is limited. Without a ticket purchased in advance, there is a good chance that no places will be available.

Cueva del Viento is not an artificial attraction, but an opportunity to discover an authentic volcanic system. The visit combines science, nature and adventure without requiring a strenuous mountain hike.
