Computer in Tenerife now even more powerful, set to support scientific research.
In Tenerife, there is a computer that ranks among the fastest in the world. The Teide High-Performance Computer, or Teide-HPC for short, is currently the 138th most powerful computer globally. This computing giant is housed at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables (ITER) and is utilized by the government and scholars from the University of La Laguna for scientific research. More details about this can be found in our article, SUPERCOMPUTER ON TENERIFE.
ITER is now expanding the capacity and efficiency of this supercomputer to further support scientific research. With increased storage capacity, researchers can undertake more ambitious projects and analyze more complex data in fields such as genomics (the study of genomes, where a genome represents a (sub)set of genes within a cell or organism), meteorology and climatology, volcanology, and artificial intelligence.
Research and Analysis
The expansion of the storage system and the enhancement of installed capacity are set to have a significant impact on high-performance computing. With greater storage, researchers can conduct more ambitious studies and analyze increasingly complex datasets. Simultaneously, the updated equipment improves storage efficiency and reliability, ensuring data integrity and the system’s continuous availability.
More for Less
The storage capacity of both Teide-HPC and Anaga-GPU is being upgraded from 1.3 petabytes (PB) to 2.4 PB—equivalent to approximately 24,000 4K movies. The upgrade included adding a new dual controller to the storage cluster and high-capacity drives, replacing four outdated controllers and 500 terabytes (TB) of hard drives that had reached the end of their lifespan. The new infrastructure occupies less physical space and consumes less energy, making the configuration more eco-friendly.
Artificial Intelligence
Additionally, the storage system is now connected to the computing nodes via multiple 100Gbps links, providing a total bandwidth of 800Gbps, compared to the previous 10Gbps links with a total bandwidth of 200Gbps. In other words, the total bandwidth for retrieving information from the storage system has been quadrupled.
The expansion of the storage system marks a milestone in ITER’s strategy to renew and increase the capacity of its computing infrastructure offered through its supercomputer division. This process began with the installation of Anaga-GPU to diversify the computational services provided and to foster emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. Plans are also underway to improve the CPU-based computational infrastructure in the near future.
