    CLIMBING MOUNT TEIDE SUSPENDED

Climbing Mount Teide on Tenerife suspended between 4 PM and 9 AM for the next fifteen days, imposed by the island government.

The Cabildo de Tenerife, the island’s governing body, has decided to suspend ascents to the peak of Mount Teide between 4:00 PM and 9:00 AM for a period of fifteen days. This measure was taken following a series of unprecedented rescue operations, where over one hundred people had to be evacuated from Spain’s highest mountain. Hiking to Teide’s summit is now temporarily restricted.

    Background of the Rescue Operations

In just three days, a total of 123 individuals were rescued on Mount Teide: 70 on Saturday, 28 on Sunday, and 25 on Monday. Blanca Pérez, Tenerife’s Councillor for Environment, Sustainability, Safety, and Emergency Services, described this situation as “unprecedented.” Incidents like these have never occurred before, not even in 2023, a year without frost or snow.

The cost of the rescues ranges from €600 to €1,800, depending on the complexity and resources required during the operation. Those identified as having been evacuated last week may be held liable for these expenses.

    Increased Visitor Numbers

The Teide National Park has seen a significant increase in visitor numbers this year. According to Pérez, the cable car registered approximately 1,800 descents in October alone. This surge in activity has led to more inexperienced hikers attempting the climb without adequate preparation or equipment, contributing to the high number of rescues.

    Safety Measures in Place

To ensure visitor safety, the Cabildo has decided to close the hiking trails to the summit during evening and nighttime hours. This temporary measure aims to prevent individuals from climbing during the coldest times of the day without proper gear or preparation.

Additionally, plans are underway to implement further measures within two weeks, including the installation of warning signs, deployment of security personnel, and regulation of hiking conditions for reaching the summit. The goal is to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the safety of all visitors.

    Importance of Proper Preparation

The recent incidents highlight the critical importance of proper preparation when climbing Mount Teide. Hikers are advised to thoroughly prepare, including checking weather conditions, carrying suitable equipment, and carefully planning their route. It is also essential to be aware of the existing rules and regulations, as well as obtaining any required permits.

    Role of the Altavista Refuge

The Altavista Refuge, located at an altitude of 3,260 meters, serves as an essential rest stop for those climbing Mount Teide. It offers shelter and facilities for up to 54 guests and is a popular choice for hikers aiming to witness the sunrise from the summit. However, the refuge is currently closed and does not have a scheduled reopening date.

    Conclusion

The recent rescue operations near the Altavista Refuge on Mount Teide underscore the need for proper preparation and awareness when attempting the climb. The Cabildo de Tenerife has taken proactive steps to ensure visitor safety and prevent future incidents. Hikers are encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety by preparing adequately and adhering to the rules and regulations in place.

I have always given Tenerife a central place and have managed to weave the island into my texts within my editorial and journalistic network. The island, which I have been in love with for decades, has seduced me into writing three books, several reading pamphlets, and thousands of articles, columns, and prose. Information and news are the products, pen and paper are the tools, while engagement is the glue. I want to share the result with everyone. I had to discover it first, then I could articulate it because we are tied to our origins by a thousand threads. Not me..., I was just born in the wrong place. © All works are copyrighted.
