Anaga by bus in the future? The residents of Anaga face a pressing issue that significantly affects their daily lives.
The rustic Parque Rural de Anaga, an area known for its natural beauty and tranquility, suffers from the pressure of increasing tourism and the resulting traffic chaos. It’s evident that mobility on Tenerife has reached its saturation point.
The local community feels abandoned by the authorities and is calling for urgent measures to restore balance in the northeastern region and to improve the quality of life for the residents of this area. They are calling for action and highlight the urgent need for an effective solution, similar to the one previously implemented in Parque Rural de Teno, to put an end to traffic jams in this paradisiacal area.
Crawling to Standstill Traffic
The traffic chaos and massive influx of tourists are driving Anaga’s residents to despair. The traffic jam already extends to Las Mercedes, and as every year, Semana Santa brings a crowd of people. The popular saying goes, “If you want to come, you must take the bus.” If the government does not listen to this call, the residents of Anaga threaten to block the access roads to the protected nature reserve in the northeast of Tenerife.
The residents of the affected hamlets and villages of Anaga claim the traffic situation is unbearable. They feel forgotten by the authorities amidst the chaos that occurs daily due to the traffic moving towards the Anaga mountains. The area around Cruz del Carmen is particularly affected by crawling and stationary traffic on the TF-12, the main road providing access to the Anaga municipality, for many the only connection to the rest of the island.
Solution
The residents demand immediate and urgent solutions from the island government and the municipal councils of Santa Cruz and La Laguna. A copy of the regulations and measures applied in the Teno mountains must bring the solution. These include deploying shuttle buses and regulating access in terms of numbers and time. Anaga by bus means private transportation is excluded.
They also demanded an increase in the number of buses going to the towns and especially the use of larger vehicles. Many people are left stranded because the buses are overcrowded. If this continues, we’ll close the roads, both the one via Las Mercedes and the one coming from San Andrés. This is the sentiment of the local population, who are tired of the situation.
Police Do Nothing
For three years, the residents have been suffering from the increasing traffic congestion; before that, only the Easter week was a busy time. Visitors’ cars are parked in the middle of the road, and the police do not intervene with the excuse that there are no tow trucks available to tow. The residents of Pico del Inglés are fed up.
To solve the traffic congestion, traffic lights were installed at the entrance of Parque Rural de Anaga and on the road to it in Las Mercedes, which remain red for minutes without vehicles driving in either direction. This is also not the solution to streamline traffic. Anaga by bus is the only way to keep polluting traffic away from one of Europe’s most beautiful forests.
