Alcohol and flying to Tenerife is a turbulent combination that can disrupt the human body.
A sunny flight to Tenerife, a destination full of adventure and relaxation. Yet, not every story from 10,000 meters above begins so carefree. One drink too many before departure may seem harmless but can turn a journey from a dream into a nightmare.
Responsibility
Airlines are often confronted with alcohol-related incidents. Starting a vacation often puts the mind and body in a mode where inhibitions are fully released. When alcohol is involved, this behavior can not only be disruptive but may lead to aggression, creating unsafe conditions for both the crew and fellow passengers.
It is important for travelers to handle alcohol responsibly and be aware of the potential consequences of (excessive) drinking while flying. Moderate drinking, staying hydrated with plenty of water, and being mindful of the well-being and safety of fellow passengers and crew members are always advisable when traveling by plane.

Health
At high altitudes, with thinner air and limited air circulation in the cabin, the effects of alcohol in the body can be amplified. Even a small amount of alcohol can lead to faster intoxication than on the ground, resulting in impaired cognitive and physical functions.
Flying can also cause dehydration since cabin air is usually drier than normal. Alcohol has a dehydrating effect and can contribute to faster dehydration during the flight, leading to discomfort, fatigue, and, in some cases, health issues.
Risky Situations
Alcohol can alter behavior and reduce self-assessment and control. This can be problematic in the confined and controlled environment of an airplane, potentially leading to disorderly conduct, inappropriate behavior, or even dangerous situations.
Excessive alcohol consumption can slow passengers’ reaction times and impair their judgment, affecting their ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergencies such as evacuation or turbulence.
For these reasons, airlines have rules and restrictions regarding alcohol consumption on board. They may limit alcohol sales, monitor the amount consumed, or even prohibit alcohol service altogether. These measures are intended to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers on board. Alcohol and flying to Tenerife is not always the best combination.
Ryanair
According to the Liverpool Echo, Idealista, and Tourinews, Ryanair sent a message to its passengers, stating that customers were not allowed to bring alcohol on board and that all hand luggage would be checked at the boarding gates. Any alcoholic drinks purchased at airport shops or elsewhere must be carefully packaged, labeled at the gate, and stowed in the aircraft hold free of charge.
After the content of the email appeared in British and then Spanish media, Ryanair was asked for clarification. While the airline did not deny sending the message to passengers, they provided an explanation that significantly contradicted the contents of the email published by the British press.
True or False?
Ryanair does not prohibit or confiscate duty-free alcohol at boarding gates. According to Ryanair’s general conditions, passengers may bring duty-free alcohol on board, but they are not permitted to consume it during the flight. This is clearly different from what appeared in the media.
The airline took three steps: an email announcing the prohibition of bringing alcohol on board, a clarification explaining that the restriction applies to consumption and not possession, and finally, a new clarification suggesting that everything remains a recommendation (!!!, ed.). There are no known reports of cases where passengers had to surrender alcoholic products at the boarding gate before boarding a Ryanair flight.
