    900 000 VEHICLES ON TENERIFE

900,000 vehicles on Tenerife and three million car journeys per day on an Island of 2,045 km² result in the complete deterioration of the road network.

The island government – the Cabildo de Tenerife – invested over 300 million euros in 2024 to modernize and improve 400 kilometers of roadways, aiming to increase safety and reduce travel times. Key projects include improvements in La Laguna, the TF-1, and the Erjos tunnel, which will benefit both residents and tourists. Modernizing bus stops will provide better waiting areas and accessibility for users, encouraging the use of this sustainable mode of transport and reducing reliance on private vehicles.

Largest Investment in Tenerife’s Road Network in Years

The government, through the Department of Roads, launched an ambitious plan in 2024 to modernize and improve the island’s road network. With a historic investment of 300 million euros, the goal is to improve mobility, ensure safety, and shorten travel times.

These projects cover approximately 400 kilometers of roadways and address the needs of thousands of residents and tourists who use this infrastructure daily. Tenerife records over 3 million daily movements and has around 900,000 vehicles on the road, making improvements to the road surface and modernization of infrastructure essential to meet this high demand.

    Investments in the North

The municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna also received significant investments in 2024, with 24 million euros allocated to strategic infrastructure projects that address bottlenecks, such as the daily traffic congestion around Padre Anchieta. Additionally, 3.7 million euros were invested in the renovation of the TF-12 road in Cruz del Carmen, which provides access to the Parque Rural de Anaga. This improvement enhances safety for both drivers and pedestrians, as the route is one of the most visited hiking areas on the island.

Furthermore, 7 million euros were spent on improvements to the TF-13 in Tacoronte, La Laguna, and Las Canteras. These works benefit thousands of drivers who use this road daily, improving traffic flow and shortening travel times during peak hours. Additionally, 470,000 euros were invested in modernizing eight bus stops between La Verdellada and Las Mercedes, improving accessibility and comfort for public transport users.

    Padre Anchieta Roundabout

Modernizing bus stops will provide better waiting areas and accessibility for users, encouraging the use of this sustainable mode of transport and reducing reliance on private vehicles.

One of the most notable projects in La Laguna is the Gran Anillo Peatonal del Padre Anchieta, a pedestrian ring that, with an investment of 10 million euros, aims to reduce traffic congestion on the TF-5. This intervention not only improves traffic flow but also enhances the safety of over 20,000 students who cross this area daily. Vehicle wait times are expected to decrease by 30%.

30 Million Euros for the TF-1

The TF-1 highway, which connects the south of Tenerife with the north, is undergoing a thorough renovation between Arico, Fasnia, and Güímar. The works, which began in November 2024, cover 24 kilometers and have a budget of 30 million euros. The completion of the works is expected in March 2025.

Improvements include resurfacing the road, installing rumble strips along the edges of the road, repainting road markings, and installing safety barriers. The TF-1 is Tenerife’s main traffic artery, and its maintenance is crucial for smooth and safe mobility. As the south of the island continues to grow, these improvements are essential for improving connectivity and reducing travel times.

Two Major Road Projects in the South of Tenerife

The Chafiras-Oroteanda Connection These works aim to provide smoother mobility for the region, resulting in a 50% time saving for Las Chafiras. The opening of the right-hand lane in November 2024 has already allowed 20,000 vehicles per day to flow more efficiently.

Closure of the Ring Road and the Erjos Tunnel The Erjos tunnel is now the longest tunnel in the Canary Islands (5,095 meters) with a budget of 263 million euros. The construction of the tunnel will improve connectivity between the north and south of the island. This project is crucial for the future of Tenerife. The tunnel will not only reduce travel times but also improve the quality of life for thousands of residents who must travel long distances daily.

    Future Mobility on Tenerife

With these historic investments, the Cabildo de Tenerife continues to work on a safer, more efficient, and modern road network, with both motorists and public transport users benefiting from improved infrastructure. In one word: mobility is improving. Every euro invested in the road network contributes to the modernization of the island and a better future for mobility on Tenerife.

I have always given Tenerife a central place and have managed to weave the island into my texts within my editorial and journalistic network. The island, which I have been in love with for decades, has seduced me into writing three books, several reading pamphlets, and thousands of articles, columns, and prose. Information and news are the products, pen and paper are the tools, while engagement is the glue. I want to share the result with everyone. I had to discover it first, then I could articulate it because we are tied to our origins by a thousand threads. Not me..., I was just born in the wrong place. © All works are copyrighted.
